Our special guest this week, Dr. Deborah Sword, will present on:

How to use your Conflict Owner’s Manual

Most conflict processes and teaching models use a step-by-step framework, starting with Step One. What if there’s an overlooked Step Zero? Whether you are a mediator, arbitrator, lawyer, or coach for professional or personal problems, chances are Step One is identifying the issue. Step Zero adds value with benefits that continue after the conflict process ends. Step Zero enhances reflective practice, deepens conflict analyses, and offers the potential to expand both the services you offer clients, and use in daily life. During the session, attendees will ‘think about how we think about’ Step Zero, which we may pin on our own unique conflict mental map.

Our presenter:

For a masters degree in conflict resolution, and doctorate in conflict analysis, Deborah drew on interdisciplinary research to understand how parties think about their conflict while they experience it. The longer Deborah was a conflict manager, the more questions she had about conflict management practices. Step One in the teaching models, and in the mediation or arbitration room felt like starting too late, while Step Zero supports individual's conflict competence. Deborah writes Substack posts and podcasts about the Conflict Owner’s Manual. She does most of her thinking about thinking on the lake in her kayak or while walking her dog.
