“Resolving Family Business Disputes - A Different Species of Mediation”

Disputes among business owners who are also family members present an increased level of complexity. Mediators helping to resolve a management or shareholder dispute in that context are faced with patterns of behavior that may be at cross-purposes to working cooperatively. A matriarch's striving to suppress disagreement among siblings in the hope of maintaining "peace in the family" may have planted the seeds of dissension that grow into open conflict after her passing to the detriment of both the family and the business.
The remarks will explain how undiscussed underlying issues can be addressed openly both in private session and in an open group setting using the interventions of facilitative mediation
